Why book with us
Van MOT Testing Walsall with clear advice.
We test vans as well as cars in our own DVSA-approved MOT bay at MF Autocentre in Walsall. Our bay is Class 4, which covers cars and goods vehicles up to 3,000kg design gross weight. That includes most small and medium vans: the Transit Connect and Courier, many Transit Customs, VW Caddys and most Transporters, Vauxhall Combos and most Vivaros, Berlingos, Partners, Doblos, Kangoos and Mercedes Vitos.
We are not set up for Class 7, which covers goods vehicles from 3,000kg up to 3,500kg. That rules out most large vans, such as Sprinters, Crafters, Ducatos, Boxers, Relays, Masters, Movanos and the bigger Transits plated at 3,500kg. We can still service and repair those vans, fix MOT failures and get them ready for their test elsewhere. We would rather tell you plainly than have you turn up and be turned away.
Not sure which class your van is? Look at the weight plate, usually fixed inside a door frame or under the bonnet. The design gross weight is the maximum the van can weigh fully loaded. If it reads 3,000kg or less, we can test it. Some names give a clue too, such as a Ducato 30 at 3,000kg or an older Transit T350 at 3,500kg. Call us with your registration and we will help you check.
A van MOT follows the same standard as a car. The tester checks lights, brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, seat belts, wipers, emissions and the structure of the van, including the load area floor and any rust near important mounts. If anything fails, we show you what and why, give you a clear price to put it right and do nothing without your approval. Advisories are explained so you can plan ahead.
We know a van off the road costs you work, so book the MOT before the old one runs out. You can test up to a month, minus a day, early and keep your renewal date. We are open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 5:30 and Saturday 8:30 to 1:00, at 2a Stockton Close, Walsall, WS2 8LH, handy for Bloxwich, Darlaston and Willenhall. Call us on 01922 636820 to book.

Common questions
- Which vans can you MOT?
- We test vans up to 3,000kg design gross weight, which is Class 4. That covers most small and medium vans, such as the Transit Connect, Caddy, Combo, Berlingo, Partner, Doblo, Kangoo, Vito and many Transit Customs, Transporters and Vivaros. Vans heavier than 3,000kg need a Class 7 MOT, which we do not offer.
- How do I find out how heavy my van is?
- Look for the weight plate, usually inside a door frame or under the bonnet. The first or highest weight shown is normally the design gross weight, which is what decides the MOT class. If it is 3,000kg or less, it is Class 4 and we can test it. If you are not sure, call us with your registration and we will help.
- Can you MOT my 3.5 tonne Sprinter or Transit?
- No. Vans between 3,000kg and 3,500kg need a Class 7 MOT, and our bay is Class 4 only. We can still service your van, repair any faults and do a pre-MOT check so it has the best chance of passing at a Class 7 test centre.
- When does a new van need its first MOT?
- A van needs its first MOT three years after it was first registered, then every year after that. You can have it tested up to a month, minus a day, before the current MOT runs out and keep the same renewal date, which helps you plan around your work.
- How long does a van MOT take?
- The test itself usually takes around 45 minutes to an hour. We will tell you how long to allow when you book and call you as soon as it is done. If anything has failed, we explain it and give you a price before doing any repairs.
- Do I need to empty my van before the MOT?
- It helps to clear out anything loose or heavy. The tester needs to see the load floor and inside the van, and an insecure load can stop the test going ahead. Fixed racking and ply-lining are fine to leave in. If in doubt, ask when you book.
- What happens if my van fails?
- We show you exactly what failed and why, then give you a clear quote for the repairs. Nothing is done without your approval. Once the work is done we retest the van. If a fault is classed as dangerous, the van should not be driven until it is fixed, and we will explain your options.
- What is the difference between an advisory and a fail?
- A fail means the van does not meet the MOT standard and needs fixing before it can pass. An advisory is an early warning about something that is worn or close to the limit but still passes, such as a tyre near the legal tread depth. We explain each one so you can plan the work.
- Can you fix my van at the same time as the MOT?
- Yes. We service and repair vans as well as test them, so if your van needs brakes, tyres, suspension or bulbs after its MOT we can quote and fix it here. Many owners book a service and MOT together to save a second trip.
