Welding

We cut out rusted or damaged metal, weld in new steel and protect the repair so it lasts — and so your car passes its MOT.

Why book with us

Welding with clear advice.

Rust is the most common reason an older car fails its MOT on structure. Sills, floor pans, jacking points and the mounting points for the suspension and seat belts are all load-bearing, so serious corrosion there is an MOT fail. Left alone, a small rust hole spreads quickly and turns a cheap patch into a much bigger repair.

We start by inspecting the car on the ramp and probing the area properly, because rust is almost always worse behind the surface than it looks from outside. You get a clear price for the real job before we pick up a welder, not a cheap quote that grows once the metal is cut open.

Every repair is done the right way: rotten metal is cut back to clean, solid steel, new steel is shaped to fit and seam-welded in, then the area is sealed and treated underneath. We never plate over rust or fill it with filler, because that only hides the problem until the next MOT.

Inspected before quoting

We probe the rust on the ramp so the price covers the real job, not a guess.

Cut out, not covered up

Rotten metal is removed back to solid steel and replaced — never plated over or filled.

MOT-standard repairs

Structural welding done to pass the MOT, with retests easy to arrange.

Sealed and protected

Finished repairs are seam-sealed and treated underneath to stop the rust coming back.

Common questions

Can you fix an MOT welding failure?
Yes. Bring your MOT sheet and we will inspect every area listed, quote the repair and get the car ready for a retest.
How much does welding cost?
It depends on how much metal needs replacing and how easy it is to reach — a small patch on an open sill is a quick job, while rust behind a fuel tank or subframe takes longer because parts have to come off first. We inspect the car and give you a price before any work starts.
Is it worth welding an older car?
Often, yes. A few hundred pounds of welding can keep a mechanically sound car on the road for years. If the rust is so widespread that the repair would cost more than the car is worth, we will tell you honestly rather than take the job.
Why not just plate over the rust?
Plating over rust traps moisture behind the patch, so the corrosion keeps spreading out of sight. MOT testers look for it and it can still fail. We cut the rust out and weld in new steel so the repair lasts.
How long does a welding repair take?
Small repairs are often done the same day. Larger jobs, such as full sills or floor sections, can take a day or two. We give you a realistic time when we quote.
Do you weld vans as well as cars?
Yes. We carry out welding repairs on cars and light commercial vans.
Do you do welding in Walsall?
Yes. We carry out all welding repairs at our Walsall workshop. Call 01922 636820 to arrange an inspection and quote.
