VW DSG gearbox service

DSG is the twin-clutch automatic gearbox used across the Volkswagen group: VW, Audi (where it is called S tronic), SEAT and Skoda. There are two main families. The 6-speed and larger 7-speed boxes have wet clutches that run in oil. The 7-speed box fitted to smaller petrol and diesel cars, such as the Golf, Polo and A3, uses dry clutches.

The wet-clutch gearboxes need their oil and filter changed at regular intervals, often every 40,000 miles. It is one of the most commonly missed items on a service history, and old oil leads to slurred changes, clutch wear and mechatronic faults. The dry-clutch 7-speed box has no routine oil change for the clutches, but it is known for judder when pulling away and for faults in its mechatronic unit, the combined hydraulic and electronic brain that operates the clutches and selects gears.

Common signs of trouble are a flashing gear indicator, the gearbox dropping into a single gear, jerky changes at low speed, a delay when selecting drive and judder in slow traffic. Some of these are fixed with a clutch adaptation or a software update, some need a mechatronic repair and some need new clutches. The fix depends on finding the real cause.

We read the gearbox fault memory, check clutch wear values and adaptation data, look at the oil where the gearbox has a service schedule and road test the car before recommending anything. That way you are not paying for a clutch pack when the problem is a sensor, or a mechatronic unit when the gearbox just needed its oil changed.
