The Trafic has been a common sight on building sites and delivery rounds for over twenty years, and we work on every generation at MF Autocentre in Walsall. That includes the panel van, crew van and passenger versions, along with the smaller Kangoo and the bigger Master. Servicing, diagnostics, clutches, gearboxes, brakes, suspension and steering are all part of our everyday work.
Older Trafics share their engines and gearboxes with the Vauxhall Vivaro, so the faults are familiar. The 2.0 and 2.5 dCi are known for gearbox bearing wear and sticking EGR valves. The 1.6 dCi from 2014 can wear its dual-mass flywheel, and vans that only do short local trips clog the particulate filter. The latest Blue dCi engines use AdBlue, which brings its own warning lights.

Then we call you with a clear price and tell you what is urgent and what can wait. No work is done without your approval. If the van is fitted with racking or carries tools, let us know when you book so we can plan around it.
Matt runs the workshop and has years of hands-on work on clutches, gearboxes, timing belts and DPFs, which covers most of what a hard-working Trafic needs. Van owners come to us from Walsall, Willenhall, Bloxwich and Aldridge, and we are open Saturday mornings as well as weekdays. We service to the Renault schedule with the right parts and fluids, so your warranty stays valid.
Most Trafics are plated at 3,000kg or less, so we can MOT them in our own Class 4 bay, along with every Kangoo. Heavier Trafics and almost all Masters are rated above 3,000kg and need a Class 7 test, which we do not offer, but we still service and repair them. The weight is on the plate inside the door frame. Common questions
- Can you MOT my Renault Trafic?
- Most Trafics are plated at 3,000kg or under, which is a Class 4 MOT we carry out in our own bay. Some heavier versions are rated above that and need a Class 7 test, which we cannot do. Check the weight plate inside the door frame, or call us with your registration and we will help you work it out.
- Why is my Trafic gearbox noisy?
- A whine or rumble that gets louder over time is often a worn bearing, a well-known problem on older 2.0 and 2.5 dCi Trafics. Left alone, it can lead to jumping out of gear or a failed gearbox. Catching it early often means a repair rather than a replacement box, so book it in when you first notice it.
- What causes judder when my Trafic pulls away?
- Usually a worn dual-mass flywheel or clutch. Carrying heavy loads and lots of stop-start driving speed up the wear. Other signs are a rattle at idle and a clutch that bites high or slips on hills. We check it properly and usually replace the clutch and flywheel together.
- Is a Trafic the same as a Vauxhall Vivaro?
- Up to 2019, the Trafic and Vivaro were built alongside each other and share engines, gearboxes and many other parts, so the faults are often identical. The Nissan Primastar and NV300 and the Fiat Talento are close relatives too. We work on all of them.
- Why does my Trafic keep losing power?
- Loss of power often comes from a blocked DPF, a sticking EGR valve, a boost leak or a turbo problem. The van may also go into limp mode to protect itself. We read the codes and test the system so we know the real cause before we quote.
- How often should a Trafic be serviced?
- Most Trafics need a service every year or at a set mileage, whichever comes first. Vans working hard every day benefit from regular oil changes, which help protect the turbo and timing parts. Tell us your registration and we will look up the right schedule for your engine.
- Do you work on the Kangoo and Master too?
- Yes. We service and repair the Kangoo and Master as well as the Trafic. Every Kangoo can be MOT’d in our Class 4 bay. Most Masters are 3,500kg and need a Class 7 test, which we do not offer, but we can service them and fix any faults.
- Will servicing with you affect my Renault warranty?
- No. Block exemption rules let you use an independent garage without losing the manufacturer warranty, as long as the service follows the Renault schedule and uses parts and fluids to the right specification. We work that way and update your service record every time.
