The Nissan Qashqai has been one of the best-selling cars in the country since 2007, and many were bought with the 1.5 dCi, 1.6 dCi or 2.0 dCi diesel. From around 2010 all of them have a diesel particulate filter in the exhaust, and so do the diesel Juke and X-Trail.
The DPF traps soot and burns it off during regeneration, which needs the exhaust to stay hot for a sustained period. Qashqais that spend their lives on short local journeys rarely manage that. Regenerations start but get interrupted, the soot load keeps rising, and eventually the DPF light comes on. Leave it and the car drops into limp mode with very little power.
Other faults make it worse. A sticking EGR valve, a faulty differential pressure sensor, a thermostat stuck open that stops the engine warming up, or a worn injector can all increase soot or stop the regeneration from starting. Oil level rising on the dipstick is another warning sign, because failed regenerations can dilute the oil with diesel.
We check the soot and ash readings, the pressure sensor, the EGR valve and the engine temperature before recommending anything. In many cases a forced regeneration or a professional clean, with the underlying fault fixed, gets the car back to normal. If the filter is full of ash at high mileage, we will tell you a replacement is the lasting fix.

- Why does my Qashqai keep showing a DPF light?
- Usually because it does mostly short trips and cannot finish a regeneration, or because another fault is producing extra soot. We check both and advise on the right fix.
- Can I clear the DPF by driving on the motorway?
- If the light has only just come on, 20 minutes or so at a steady motorway speed can let the filter regenerate. If the car is in limp mode or the light stays on, book a check.
- Is a petrol Qashqai a better choice for short trips?
- For mostly short local driving, a petrol engine avoids DPF problems. If you already own a diesel, regular longer runs and a healthy EGR system go a long way.
