Ford fitted the 1.0 EcoBoost three-cylinder engine to the Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, C-Max, EcoSport and Transit Connect from 2012. Instead of a dry belt behind a cover or a metal chain, it uses a toothed timing belt that runs inside the engine, bathed in oil. The oil pump is driven by a second, smaller wet belt. The 2.0 EcoBlue diesel in the Transit and Transit Custom uses the same idea.
Wet belts are quiet and efficient, but they are sensitive to oil quality. The wrong oil, stretched service intervals and lots of short journeys make the belt swell and break up. Small pieces of rubber collect in the oil pickup strainer in the sump. As the strainer clogs, oil pressure falls, and an engine starved of oil can wear its bearings, turbo and camshafts in a very short time.
The published replacement interval on these engines is long, and we regularly see belts that are cracked or swollen well before it. That is why we inspect the belt and look at the oil rather than going by mileage alone. If the belt is healthy we tell you so and note when to check it again. If it is worn, we replace it along with the tensioner and the parts the kit calls for.
Catching a worn wet belt early is the difference between a planned belt change and a replacement engine. If you drive a Ford with the 1.0 EcoBoost and have no record of the belt ever being looked at, it is worth booking a check with us at our Walsall workshop.
