The Ducato is a big, practical van used by couriers, builders and removals firms, and we work on them regularly at MF Autocentre in Walsall. We look after panel vans, tippers, Lutons and crew cabs from the 2006 model onwards, along with the smaller Doblo and Fiorino. Servicing, warning lights, gearboxes, clutches, brakes, suspension and steering are all part of our everyday work.
Ducatos work hard, and a few problems come up again and again. On the 2006 to 2014 vans the six-speed gearbox is known for bearing failure, which starts as a whine and gets worse. Heavy loads and stop-start driving wear clutches and flywheels. Later Euro 6 vans add AdBlue, and short local runs clog the particulate filter. Knowing this helps us get straight to the cause.
We start by looking properly. We read the fault codes, check the basics and test before we replace anything. Then we ring you with a clear quote and tell you what is urgent and what can wait. Matt runs the workshop and has years of hands-on experience with gearboxes, clutches, DPFs and turbos, the work a busy Ducato most often needs. The number on a Ducato tells you its weight: a Ducato 30 is 3,000kg, a 33 is 3,300kg and a 35 is 3,500kg. Most are 33 or 35 and need a Class 7 MOT, which we do not offer, but we service and repair them and fix MOT failures. A Ducato 30, Doblos and Fiorinos can be tested in our own Class 4 bay. Common questions
- Can you MOT my Fiat Ducato?
- Only if it is a Ducato 30, which is plated at 3,000kg and takes a Class 4 test. Ducato 33, 35 and Maxi vans are heavier and need a Class 7 MOT, which we do not do. We can still service and repair them and fix any faults before their test. The weight is also on the plate inside the door frame.
- Why is my Ducato gearbox whining?
- On 2006 to 2014 Ducatos a whine or rumble that gets louder over time is often a worn gearbox bearing. If it is left, it can lead to noisy gear changes, jumping out of gear or a failed gearbox. Catching it early often means a repair rather than a replacement box, so book it in when you first hear it.
- How long does a Ducato clutch last?
- It depends on how the van is used. A Ducato carrying heavy loads around town will wear its clutch much faster than one doing long motorway runs. Signs of wear are slipping on hills, a high biting point and judder when pulling away. We check it and quote before any work.
- Why does my Ducato keep going into limp mode?
- Limp mode protects the engine when the computer sees a problem. On Ducatos it is often linked to a blocked DPF, a sticking EGR valve, a boost leak or an AdBlue fault. We read the codes and test the system so you know the cause before you spend anything.
- Is a Ducato the same as a Peugeot Boxer or Citroën Relay?
- The body and much of the running gear are shared, as all three are built together. Engines can differ, as many Ducatos use Fiat MultiJet engines while the Boxer and Relay often use Peugeot engines. We check exactly what your van has before ordering parts.
- How often should a Ducato be serviced?
- Most Ducatos need a service once a year or at a set mileage, whichever comes first. Vans that carry heavy loads or work every day benefit from regular oil changes. Give us your registration and we will look up the right schedule for your engine.
- Do you work on the Doblo and Fiorino?
- Yes. We service and repair the smaller Fiat vans too, and because they are under 3,000kg we can MOT them in our own Class 4 bay. The Doblo is a common choice for tradespeople, and the same fault finding approach applies.
- Will servicing with you affect my Fiat warranty?
- No. Under block exemption rules an independent garage can service your van without affecting the warranty, as long as the Fiat schedule is followed and parts and fluids meet the right specification. That is how we work on every van.
