Audi 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI turbo petrol engines built from around 2008 to 2012 are well known for heavy oil consumption. They were fitted to the A3, A4, A5, A6, Q5 and TT, as well as VW, SEAT and Skoda models. Owners notice they are adding oil between services, sometimes a litre every 1,000 miles or worse.
The main cause on these engines is the piston rings. The oil control rings and the small drain holes in the pistons clog with carbon, so oil that should be scraped back into the sump is burned in the cylinders instead. A faulty crankcase breather, known as the PCV valve, can make it worse, and so can worn valve stem seals or a leaking turbo seal.
Letting it run low on oil is the real danger. These engines also have a timing chain and tensioner that do not tolerate low oil, and oily spark plugs lead to misfires and a damaged catalytic converter. Running the car between top-ups without knowing how much it uses is a gamble.
We start with the cheap and simple checks: the PCV valve, leaks and a measured consumption test over a set mileage. If the rings are the problem, the proper fix is updated pistons and rings, which means taking the engine apart. We will lay out the options honestly, including when a well-maintained car is better managed with regular top-ups than a large repair bill.

- How much oil use is normal for a TFSI?
- Most healthy engines use very little between services. If you are topping up regularly, especially more than a litre every couple of thousand miles, it is worth a consumption test.
- Is it just the PCV valve?
- Sometimes. A failed PCV valve can cause oil use and a whistling noise, and it is a far cheaper fix. That is why we test it before looking at the pistons and rings.
- Can I keep topping it up?
- You can, as long as you check the level often and never let it run low. Low oil on these engines puts the timing chain and turbo at risk.
