Why Will Not My Car Start? Battery, Starter, and Fuel Issues

Three symptoms and what they mean

If your car will not start, listen carefully to what happens when you turn the key. Is there a clicking noise? Does the engine crank but not fire up? Or is there complete silence? Each symptom points to a different problem.

Clicking — usually a battery problem

Rapid clicking when you turn the key usually means a weak or flat battery. The starter is trying to turn the engine but there is not enough power. A battery can fail suddenly, especially in cold weather.

Try jump-starting the car if you have jumper cables and another vehicle. If it starts, your battery is likely weak. If it does not, the battery may be dead or the starter might be faulty. Either way, call us on 01922 636820 and we will diagnose it.

Cranks but will not fire — fuel or ignition issue

If the engine cranks (turns over) but does not catch and run, the problem is usually fuel or ignition. Common causes are a failed fuel pump, a faulty immobiliser, or a fuel injection fault.

This one needs diagnostic equipment to identify. We will scan for fault codes and test the fuel system, ignition system, and starter. Once we know what is wrong, we can fix it.

Complete silence — electrical fault

No clicking, no cranking, nothing. That usually means a battery so flat it cannot power even the starter, or an electrical connection problem. Check that the battery terminals are clean and tight. If that does not help, you need a diagnostic check.
