What that grinding noise means

A grinding noise when you brake usually means your brake pads are worn through to the metal backing plate. When the metal grinds against the disc, that is the noise you hear. It is a sign you need brakes now, not later.

Some people think it will go away on its own or hope they can get through a few more weeks. Do not. Grinding brakes damage your discs as well, turning a simple pad replacement into an expensive disc and pad job.

Worn pads, scored discs, and stone ingress

Brake pads wear over time — that is normal. Discs can also wear or become scored if pads are left too long. Sometimes a small stone gets trapped and causes noise without real damage. The only way to know is to inspect.
