The difference between belts and chains

Timing belts are rubber and wear out. Timing chains are metal and theoretically last for life — but only if properly tensioned and lubricated. Both keep your engine in sync by controlling when the valves open and close.

Older cars had chains; modern cars often have belts. Some newer engines have chains that need tensioner replacement. The key is knowing which your car has and when it is due.

When is it due?

Timing belt intervals vary widely — some cars are due at 60,000 miles, others at 120,000 miles or more. Some are based on time (five to ten years). Your handbook has the schedule, or we can look it up from your registration.

Why you cannot ignore this

A failed timing belt can destroy your engine in seconds. On an interference engine (most modern cars), the valves hit the pistons and the engine is ruined. Repair costs thousands. On a non-interference engine, you might get lucky — the car just stops.

The cost of replacing a belt on time (typically 300 to 600 pounds) is a fraction of engine rebuild cost. It is not an optional maintenance item.

Timing chain rattle

Some cars (notably BMW N47 diesels and certain Ford EcoBoost engines) suffer from timing chain rattle — a known fault where the chain stretches. If you hear a rattle on cold start, do not ignore it. This is a real fault that needs professional diagnosis.
