What AdBlue does
Most modern Mercedes-Benz diesels, badged BlueTEC, use AdBlue to meet emissions rules. AdBlue is a urea solution stored in its own tank. The system sprays a measured amount into the exhaust, where a catalyst uses it to turn harmful nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water.
You will find it on many C-Class, E-Class, GLC, Vito and Sprinter models, especially Euro 6 vehicles from around 2014 onwards.
Why the countdown matters
When the system is low on AdBlue or detects a fault, the dashboard shows a message such as AdBlue: No start in 500 miles. The number goes down as you drive. When it reaches zero, the engine will not restart once you switch it off.
The car usually drives perfectly normally while the countdown runs, which is why people put it off. If you rely on your car or van for work, do not wait until the last few miles. A van that will not restart at a customer site costs far more in lost time than a quick check at the first warning.
Step one: check the AdBlue level
The simplest cause is an empty tank. AdBlue is sold at most fuel stations. The filler is usually next to the diesel filler or in the boot, depending on the model. Use fresh AdBlue from a sealed container and never put anything else in the tank.
After filling, the warning may take a short drive to clear. If it goes, that was the problem. If it stays, or it comes back soon after, there is a fault in the system.
The common faults
The heater inside the AdBlue tank is a frequent failure. AdBlue freezes at around minus 11 degrees, so the system heats it, and when the heater fails the system reports a fault. The pump and level sensor in the tank can also stop working.
Further along, the dosing injector in the exhaust can block with white crystals, and the NOx sensors that measure how well the system is working can fail. Contaminated or old AdBlue can cause several of these problems at once.
What we do
We read the fault codes across the engine and emissions systems, check the AdBlue quality, and test the heater, pump, dosing injector and sensors. On some models the heater, pump and sensor are only available as one tank unit, and we explain that before any work starts.

Tips to avoid AdBlue trouble
Keep the tank topped up rather than letting it run to empty, and always use AdBlue from a sealed container. AdBlue that has been stored in an open or dirty container can be contaminated, and it breaks down if kept somewhere hot for a long time.
Never add water, diesel or any additive to the AdBlue tank. If you do put the wrong fluid in, do not start the engine. Call us and we will drain the tank before any damage is done.
