How Often Should I Service My Car? Interim, Full and Major Explained
20 June 2026 · 6 min read
The three types of service
Your car needs three different levels of service depending on how often you drive and how long it has been since the last service. Many people think servicing is just an oil change — it is not. Each service type covers different checks and maintenance.
Manufacturers publish specific service schedules for your car. The schedule depends on your engine type, age, and sometimes whether you drive mostly short journeys or long distances. We can look up the exact schedule for your registration.
Interim service (6 months / 6,000 miles)
An interim service is the light touch — perfect for drivers who rack up high mileage between annual services. It includes an oil and filter change, fluid top-ups (coolant, brake, power steering), and visual checks of lights, wipers, brakes, and tyres.
Think of it as a halfway check. If you drive 15,000 miles a year, an interim service halfway through keeps you safer and extends the time between heavier services.
Full service (12 months / 12,000 miles)
A full service covers everything in an interim service, plus an air filter replacement. We inspect brake discs and hoses, steering and suspension components, and belts and hoses. On modern cars, we often check the pollen filter too.
Most manufacturers recommend a full service at least once a year. Even if you drive low mileage, a full service every 12 months keeps your car in good shape.
Major service (24 months / 24,000 miles)
A major service is the deep clean — everything from the full service, plus spark plug changes (if due), brake fluid condition checks, and comprehensive system inspections. We check cooling fan operation, clutch operation, driveline gaiters, and wheel bearings.
High-mileage drivers or older cars often benefit from major services more frequently than the 24-month recommendation. We can advise based on your history.
What matters most
The key is not to ignore servicing. A poorly serviced car will cost you far more in repairs down the line than you save by skipping services.
