Will Servicing at an Independent Garage Affect My Warranty?

17 September 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer

No. In the UK you can have your car serviced at an independent garage without affecting the manufacturer warranty. Competition rules known as block exemption stop car makers from making the warranty depend on servicing at a main dealer. The conditions are that the service follows the manufacturer schedule and uses parts and fluids of matching quality, and that the work is properly recorded.

Many drivers still believe they have to go back to the dealer for the first three years. That is a myth, and it can cost you more than you need to pay.

What block exemption is

Block exemption is the name for competition rules covering agreements in the motor trade. In the UK they are now set out in the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Order 2023, which came into force on 1 June 2023 and runs until 31 May 2029. It replaced the older EU-based rules that applied before.

In plain terms, it protects your right to choose where your car is looked after. Among other things, the rules are designed to keep the servicing and repair market open to independent garages, including their access to repair information and diagnostic data. The Competition and Markets Authority has made clear that warranties should not stop owners from using independent repairers.

The conditions you need to meet

Your warranty stays valid as long as the car is serviced in line with the manufacturer schedule. That means the right service at the right mileage or time, with every item that is due on that service actually done.

Parts must be original parts or parts of matching quality, and oils and fluids must meet the specification set by the manufacturer. This matters. Using an engine oil that does not meet the required specification could give a manufacturer grounds to question a claim for engine damage.

Finally, keep the paperwork. Ask for an itemised invoice listing the parts and fluids used, and make sure the service is recorded in your service book or the digital service record for your car. Many manufacturers now keep service records online rather than in a paper book, and independent garages can update these for most makes.

What block exemption does not cover

If something goes wrong that is covered by the warranty, the repair itself is normally carried out by a franchised dealer, because the manufacturer pays for that work. Block exemption is about routine servicing and maintenance, not warranty repairs.

Wear and tear items, such as brake pads, tyres, wiper blades and bulbs, are not usually covered by a manufacturer warranty anyway. Replacing them at an independent garage with parts of matching quality does not affect your cover.

Safety recalls are also handled through the manufacturer and its dealers, and they are free. An independent garage can check whether your car has an outstanding recall and point you in the right direction.

If a dealer tells you that using another garage will void your manufacturer warranty, ask them to show you where the warranty terms say so. Separate extended warranties bought from a dealer or a warranty company have their own terms and conditions. Read the small print on servicing before you buy, as some of these policies set their own rules.

Why drivers choose an independent garage

The main reasons are cost and convenience, and there is no warranty penalty for making that choice. Independent garages often charge less for labour than main dealers, and you usually deal directly with the people who work on your car. Keeping the same local garage throughout the life of the car also means someone gets to know it and its history.

Independent garages can also carry out the MOT, which becomes due three years after the car is first registered, so servicing and MOT can be handled in one place if you prefer.

What you should not accept is a cut-price service that skips items on the schedule or uses the wrong oil. A proper service to the manufacturer schedule protects both your car and your warranty.
